Joseph Roty is a renowned wine producer in the Burgundy region and one of the oldest wine-producing families in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation. They have been crafting wines in this area since 1710. Over 70% of the vines in the estate are more than 80 years old, resulting in extremely limited production. A quarter of the vineyard consists of old vines planted before 1914, which enables their wines to surpass village-level quality and approach the standards of premier cru. The estate itself rarely engages in external promotion, and there is limited information available about them in the market, lending an air of mystery.

Steen Öhman, author of the well-known wine review website Winehog, once remarked, "Although Domaine Joseph Roty is very low-key, their wines make a powerful statement. Over the past few decades, they have consistently produced exceptional wines." He also mentioned that during his visit to the estate years ago, he found the wines to be unique and of exceptionally high quality.

William Kelley, lead writer for Wine Advocate, noted, "Fans of Roty will be familiar with their winemaking style: a high proportion of old vines; minimal use of chemical treatments in the vineyards, with meticulous care given to the soil; destemmed grapes fermented in concrete tanks; and aging in new, lightly smoked oak barrels for 15 to 16 months."

William Kelley believes that Roty's wines today are more refined than in the past. The rich fruitiness allows the structural tannins to be less pronounced in their youth, seamlessly integrating with the fruit flavors. These wines are not as intimidating in their youth as one might stereotypically assume, and as they age, they continue to evolve with consistent elegance.
