Château Pétrus is located in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, France, and is the most renowned estate in the region. It possesses nearly 12 hectares of land, which is quite significant in an area where most estates are small. Initially, Château Pétrus was an obscure winery, ranking only fourth or fifth in the Pomerol region. It wasn't until 1925, when Madame Edmond Loubat purchased the estate from the previous owners, the Arnaud family, that the illustrious history of Château Pétrus began.

Château Pétrus has 11.5 hectares of vineyards, with the topsoil consisting of pure clay, beneath which lies a layer of terracotta, and deeper down, a layer of iron-rich limestone, coupled with an excellent drainage system. The primary grape variety planted is Merlot, which accounts for about 95% of the vineyard; the remaining 5% is Cabernet Franc. Since Cabernet Franc ripens earlier, it is generally not used for winemaking unless the vintage is particularly good.

The planting density is 6,000 vines per hectare, with an average vine age of around 40 years, some even reaching 80 years. The operators adopt a more traditional approach to vineyard renewal, selecting the best quality vines as "mother stocks," similar to the method used by Château Margaux when it removed older roots in 1946. The vineyard also employs strict "crop control," retaining a few buds per vine and allowing only one bunch of grapes per bud, aiming for full ripeness while avoiding overripeness, which could affect the wine's delicate flavor.
